Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Reserves
In 1999, Buena Vista County implemented the Reserve Program. The program allows the Sheriff to train and deputize men and women to act as sworn law enforcement officers. The Reserve Deputies work in addition to, and have all the same powers as, the full-time deputies. Each Reserve Deputy commits to working a minimum of 8 hours per month in addition to time spent at meetings, training, fundraising, and special events. Some of the local events that the Reserves have provided coverage for include RAGBRAI, Thresherman’s, the County Fair, and more. In addition to working patrol shifts, they give back to the community by volunteering for National Night Out, and handing out hats and gloves during the Christmas Parade.
They provide extra manpower at very little expense to the taxpayers of Buena Vista County. The assistance of the Reserve Officers is essential to the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Buena Vista County. Their willingness to work allows the Sheriff’s Office to effectively staff shifts, provide adequate manpower for large-scale events, and limit overtime hours for full-time deputies. They do all this for a yearly paycheck of $10.00 –before taxes.
