08.12.14 – On August 11, 2014 at approximately 5:00 P.M. the Buena Vista County Communications Center received a call from a resident near Casino Road that was advising of a capsized canoe with two boaters in the water.  The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to this incident.

The Sheriff’s Office responded with a patrol boat to the area northeast of Casino Beach where deputies discovered one boater in the water with a life jacket approximately ¼ mile from the capsized canoe.  The victim in the water was removed from the water and stated that there was another boater with her that was still hanging onto the canoe.  Deputies responded to the canoe and removed the other victim from the water.

The victims, Rebecca Simons age 23 from Dow City, Iowa and Tara Kerger age 23 from Logan, Iowa, were transported to a dock off of Circle Park where Deputies had requested an ambulance to check the victims for any injuries.  The victims were treated and released at the scene by the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Ambulance.  The canoe was recovered by the Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Storm Lake Marina.  There was no damage to the canoe.

The incident was caused by high winds causing the canoe to become swamped with water and capsize.  The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Storm Lake Police Department, the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Paramedics and by Buena Vista University Security.

08.05.14 – On 08-04-14 at approximately 7:24 a.m. the Buena Vista County Communication Center received a 911 call reporting a two vehicle motor vehicle accident at the intersection of 610th St. and 190th Ave in rural Newell. The caller reported that drivers of both vehicle's sustained injuries in the accident. Newell Fire Department and ambulance were dispatched along with the Buena Vista Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival at the scene it was discovered that the accident occurred between a Northbound Ford F150 pickup driven by Walter Morris age 41, of Newell and an eastbound Ford F150 pickup driven by Steven Williams age 61, of Storm Lake.

Investigation at the scene determined the accident occurred at an uncontrolled intersection with standing cornfields on all four corners of the intersection. It was determined the vehicle driven by Morris collided with the driver's side rear of the vehicle driven by Williams. Morris vehicle continued northbound and ended up in the east ditch of 190th Ave and Williams vehicle continued eastbound into the north ditch of 610th St. Williams vehicle rolled over numerous times in the ditch ejecting Williams out of the vehicle.

Both Williams and Morris were transported by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. Williams was then life flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. The extent of the drivers injuries are unknown at this time. This accident is still under investigation.

This is a reminder to use extreme caution at these rural uncontrolled intersections that the vision is obscured due to standing crops.
